Searching for the Killers

You guys who stop by regularly know that we recently went up to Indy for the funeral of the son of our dearest friends.

The local police aren't having any luck finding the gangbanger wannabes that murdered him in cold blood.

Here's a LINK with some more detail about the crime, and another LINK with my boy MSgt J doing that thing where the parents appeal to the public for help.

They're having a vigil at the crime scene tomorrow night at 6 pm. If anyone could go and stand with my brother I would appreciate that. I'm stuck down in Florida and Georgia.
It's at 7013 E. 56th St. (the Marathon gas station) in Lawrence IN, a suburb of Indianapolis.

Kyle's parents took all the life insurance from his death and put it into a scholarship fund at the local college Kyle was attending.

If you can't be there for the vigil, please go drop a dime into the fund and help give some other kid a chance to get the education that Kyle had taken from him.

Here's the LINK to donate to Vincennes University. When you go to that page, just click on the yellow button at the top and it will take you to the donation page. You can select your donation to go towards the Kyle Jobin Scholarship.

I tried to find the LINK to donate to the Making Sure Kyle's Killers Get Fucked In The Ass Daily In Prison For The Rest Of Their Lives Fund, but it wasn't there.

The scholarship will have to do.

For now.

Sunny Florida

I flew into Jacksonville, then drove a company truck the rest of the way down. Not a bad trip overall.

TSA interaction was friendlier and more laid back than I remember. Maybe I'm just getting used to it.
I did the usual strip-down, removing my jacket, shoes, belt and emptying my pockets. (Why does going through TSA always remind me of the last time I was arrested?)
Anyway, after pulling the two laptops out of my carry-on, I started to pull out all the rest of that electronic shit I keep in there so I could spread it out on a tray. The TSA agent up front, who happened to look all of 20 years old, says, "Don't worry about that stuff, sir. You can just leave that in there." So I says, "Really? 'Cause the last time I sent my bag through with all this in it, you guys shit a brick."
He just chuckled and said, "It'll be fine sir."

So I step through the Pervo-O-Scan and get over to the other end of the conveyor belt just in time to see the looks on the faces of the other TSA agents when my bag hit that fucking x-ray screen.

They shit a brick.

They brought a tray over so I could unload all that other shit and spread it out so it could go through the x-ray again, and they sent the bag through again as well to make sure, of course.

The patch cord for the digital camera
The wall charger for the digital camera battery
The power cord for the work laptop
The power cord for the personal laptop
The charger/patch cord for the Blackberry
The computer mouse
The ethernet cable
The calculator
and that one patch cord that I can't remember what it goes to, but it stays in my bag because as soon as I take it out, I'll need that fucker...

I threw my cased reading glasses and the Tony Hillerman novel in there as well for good measure.

Fucker up front wouldn't make eye contact with me...

Florida's not sunny. It's kinda drizzly and miserable.

but it's not cold.

Sunday morning sleep-in #76

Things are getting pretty crappy over in the Ukraine. Protests have been going on since November. Not that you'd hear about it from the news or anything...

Watch the live stream from Ukraine over at Kerodin's blog.

I've got a plane to catch

Saturday Morning Coffee #92

Rolled in yesterday afternoon, and it sure is nice to be back at the old homestead.

We whipped up a delicious dinner of chicken and bacon kabobs, with white rice and corn-on-the-cob. After we finished eating, we settled in front of the roaring fire with a couple beers and Mrs B started flipping through the channels trying to find something decent to watch.

I was out cold by the time she picked a program.

The advantages of OCD.

Mrs B bumped our books against the bank statement for the first time in something like three years.
She was within $20 of actual.

Now if I can just get her to do my work budget for me.

I fly out in the morning for sunny Florida. I'll spend the week wandering around the Tampa/Orlando area in the middle of the state.

Friday Funny

Funniest shit I've seen in forever.

Trying to wrap things up neatly here and get back home.
It would be great to have a couple days with Mrs B before I have to head down to Florida next week.

Guard Donkeys

Who knew?

Yesterday, on the way over to our site in Georgia, I came across where a farmer's donkey had gotten out into the road and been hit by a truck. It was a very unpleasant scene.

I had the opportunity to overhear the farmer talking to a sheriff's deputy about his "guard donkey".
I thought the guy was maybe a little eccentric or something. You know, there's a lot of people who live out in the boonies of Georgia for a reason...

I had to Google it.
No shit. Farmers use guard donkeys to protect their herds from coyotes and such.

Learn something new every day I guess.

Sunday morning sleep-in #75

Ha Ha. Yeah, right. No sleeping in this weekend.

Time to hit the road.
Back out to Georgia again today, and tomorrow, and the next day...

Saturday Morning Coffee #91

It's a working weekend. Gotta head over to Georgia and do what I can to help the boys out.

Quick and easy Chili-Mac

1 lb Box of Macaroni elbows
4 Cans Hormel chili (No beans)
2 Cans Rotel Tomatoes and Chilis (Drained)

Get your chili and Rotel mixed and simmering in a soup pot first, then boil your macaroni noodles in a large pot separately.
Once your macaroni is ready, (about 10 minutes) drain it well and put it back into the large pot. Mix the chili into it and serve hot.

Total prep time is about 20-30 minutes. Makes enough to feed a half-dozen guys. Great for roofing crews working in the winter, or group trips to the range. You can whip this up on a Coleman stove easy.

For some reason, I doubt they'll let me whip out the Coleman and start cooking on the jobsite.

I have no idea what jeans like that would have to do with our economy, but...Dayum.

Home Sweet Home

My first real coffee in a week. It's nice to be home.

Sorry MSgt J. That Kuerig machine is cute and all, but it doesn't make manly man coffee.

After my first cup, I was back in the library pounding out emails like a madman by 0600. Being all productive and shit. Now I'm on my third cup and the caffeine shakes are starting, and it feels gooood.

But hey, if you're looking for an easy Hump Day Rule 5 post, why not go for the low hanging fruit?

Heh heh. "Low hanging fruit" See what I did there?

Sunday Morning

“I know that pain is the most important thing in the universes. Greater than survival, greater than love, greater even than the beauty it brings about. For without pain, there can be no pleasure. Without sadness, there can be no happiness. Without misery there can be no beauty. And without these, life is endless, hopeless, doomed and damned.
Adult. You have become adult.”
― Harlan EllisonPaingod and other delusions

The memorial service is today.

To watch my brother in pain tears my heart out.

The Pawn

Great article HERE.

PS - Thanks to everyone for all the concern.

On Friday night, the son of our dearest friends was found slumped over the wheel of his car, idling at the gas pumps at a station in Lawrence, Indiana. He had been shot in the head.
His name was Kyle. He was going to turn 20 this March.
They rushed him to a hospital, but by Saturday morning it was obvious there was nothing they could do.
Late on Sunday morning, they removed the machinery they were using to keep him alive and he passed away with his mother and father by his side.

It's hard to explain the bonds that grow between families that serve together. I feel closer to MSgt J and his family than I do to much of my own flesh and blood.

We leave tomorrow morning to spend the weekend up in Indianapolis. The memorial service is on Sunday.
Blogging will probably be light. (Although, as you can see from yesterday, I still have some "Hump Day Rule 5" posts queued up to post on Wednesday mornings.)

I'll figure out how to write more later. Right now I'm just not much in the mood.

Saturday Morning Coffee #90

I was sitting here in the half-light of dawn, pecking away at my computer.
The usual drivel was pouring out of my thoughts and onto the screen.
Then my phone rang, and everything changed.

Murder in Indianapolis.

I'm going to take a few days off. Maybe a lot of days off.
